WHY MULCH YOUR TREE BRANCHES

Mulching around plants keeps the roots cool in summer and warm in winter and helps maintain moisture. Reduces soil erosion and soil compact around plants. Provides nutrients.

Mulching plants is both functional and decorative. Mulch typically is an organic material spread on the soil surface to protect roots from heat, cold, and drought, and to provide nutrients to plants as it decomposes. Once you have chosen the right plant for a given site, and followed the proper planting procedures, you should mulch the plant and create a stable environment for root growth.

WHAT MAKES GOOD MULCH?

TEXTURE

Mulch of a medium texture is best for the garden. Fine particles tend to pack down and retain moisture, which then evaporates before reaching plant roots. Coarse mulch doesn't work as well.

NUTRIENTS

Organic mulch provides nutrient- rich humus as it decomposes. This also improves soil structure.

APPEARANCE

It really is up to you, what works for your garden. Composted mulch generally has more uniform texture than mulch that is not composted. Composting is probably not needed for disease and insect control if the mulch is derived from healthy plants; however, if it has been sitting outside indefinitely it is likely that weed seeds are present.

HOW TO USE MULCH

There are many reasons to use mulch in your garden. First, it can enrich the soil by conserving soil moisture, increasing fertility and helping to reduce weed growth. Mulching can also be used aesthetically to line flowerbeds or trees. Mulch can be made from many different materials, like manure, compost or tree debris. This is the method we use at Reiner’s. We believe in being environmentally conscious, so every tree we remove is recycled into mulch for use in other areas of your garden. Organic mulches are usually made up of leaves, grass, peat moss, wood chips, sawdust, straw and bark chips. These are the best to use in your garden because they aren’t as invasive as chemical mulches. Our tree maintenance experts will keep the sawdust and debris to a minimum, as they understand that the job isn’t finished until the site is completely cleared. We can effectively grind even the largest stumps down below ground level and fill the resulting cavity with earth or mulch as necessary.
